Exclusively Madonna: "If She Were Alive, I Would Be Someone Else"
"Exclusively Madonna" is one of the most-voted single-artist channels in Kalisha's Exclusive collection — 434 votes, running the catalog of the best-selling female recording artist in recorded history.
She was born Madonna Louise Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan, in 1958. Her mother, also named Madonna, died of breast cancer in 1963, when Madonna was five. The two had been close, and decades later, in a 1989 Rolling Stone interview, Madonna put the loss in the starkest terms she ever has: "If she were alive, I would be someone else."
In 1978, she moved to New York with almost nothing, and the years that followed weren't the fast rise the legend suggests — she worked shifts at Dunkin' Donuts and took modeling jobs to get by before "Everybody" (1982) and her self-titled debut album (1983) finally broke her through. What came next is the part everyone remembers: a run of reinventions so deliberate and so total that she essentially wrote the playbook every pop star since has followed. Like a Virgin (1984) made her a provocateur. Like a Prayer (1989) — burning crosses, religious imagery, a Pepsi sponsorship pulled after the Vatican objected — made her a controversy the Pope himself weighed in on. Erotica and the Sex book (1992) pushed further still. Ray of Light (1998) rebuilt her entirely around electronica and won her a Grammy for it. Each era wasn't a comeback — it was a deliberate, total change of identity, timed to her own schedule, on her own terms.
The numbers that resulted are almost absurd: somewhere between 300 and 400 million records sold, a Guinness World Record as the best-selling female recording artist of all time since 2009, and a claim to only being outsold, historically, by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson.
None of that explains why she did it quite as well as her own sentence does. A five-year-old lost the person who defined who she was, and grew up building a career on making sure no one else ever got to do that again.
